Brown Sugar and Spice

Brown Sugar and Spice by Betty Peter is a children’s book. Harriet, the main character, grows up in the Caribbean during World War II. Her father, whom she refers to as the “Master of Military Manners” is stationed in the British West Indies. Harriet’s mother, “The Cracker of Codes” works for the government as well. The family live in St. Lucia and St. Vincent during the war. This book captures the flavor of the Caribbean under British rule at this time. Betty Peter is a Trinidadian author.
